About Conquering Thrones and
Revelling in Madness
by Tournament Organizer, Wolfgang Penetsdorfer
When you want to play A Game of Thrones, you either die, or you find a great place to game.
That's especially true for players and groups from small countries like Austria (it's still not a mistake to mention, that we have NO kangaroos here!), in rather small cities like Salzburg, where you won't find any serious game store offering more than just one CCG and some pieces of cardboard with mangas.
Now while it is fun to have an active local playgroup that meets almost once in a week, it's even more fun to hook up with players from other countries, either for some friendly games or for some competitive tourneys. National Championships are a start, but many of us have always longed for a really big international event. Something that is special and unique, of high importance (at least it gives you that feeling), resembling GenCon in the US, which is just out of reach for us Europeans.
This was the goal from the beginning, when in 2005 I invited AGOT players from all over Europe to the first Tourney of Stahleck, as a side-event to a bigger Middle-Earth Gaming Convention.
Now the child has grown up, learned to stand on its own feet, and also brought along its twin brother, the Call of Cthulhu LCG. In cooperation with the German FFG distributor Heidelberger Spiele, who will spice up the event with a lot of boardgame action, Castle Stahleck is prepared to become the capital of FFG gaming in Europe.
The event will take place from 27–29 June 2008 at Castle Stahleck (Bacharach, Germany).
In order to attract both competitive and casual players, there are the big tournaments, whose winner may claim to be Europe's best of the year. And there are fun events as well, like Classic Highlander, Draft, Peasant Tourneys and a team event.
Some 120 players from all directions will gather at Castle Stahleck for the first event of this sort, so if you have a chance to be among them, don't hesitate! There are numerous quests to accomplish, including the conquering of thrones and the supplicant veneration of the Great Old Ones, and to be a part of these quests from the very beginning will make all of us proud one day!
Have a look at the Stahleck Homepage, where you will find all the information, including special rules for tournaments.
